Coffee: a cancer risk factor?

Coffee: a cancer risk factor?

In his latest article for the Evening Standard, Dr Christian Jessen has looked at the link between coffee and cancer.

This is something that has attracted lots of often conflicting media coverage over the years and there have been various claims that have sometimes contradicted each other.

We have had articles claiming that coffee prevents breast cancer while others have suggested coffee is a cause of breast cancer.

It is no wonder people are confused about what to think, and this kind of contradictory coverage feeds the incorrect perception that scientists are always changing their minds about what causes and prevents cancer.

Dr Jessen’s article gives his view that there is no strong evidence that coffee either causes or prevents cancer. We agree with this and it is good to see a sensible approach to a subject that has all too often been poorly reported.

Saying the evidence doesn’t support a link might not make as good a headline as coffee causing or preventing cancer. It is, though, more accurate.

But that is not the end of the story for cancer and coffee.

Unsweetened coffee (or tea), can be useful if you are looking for options to act as substitutes for sugary drinks, which we recommend avoiding because they typically contain lots of calories but do not fill you up.

Bear in mind, though, that some coffees, particularly those from high street coffee shops, can contain a lot of calories. In fact, a couple of years ago we highlighted how some iced coffees can contain a quarter of your daily calories.
